Mount Bromo has been known as one of major international tourism destinations in East Java, Indonesia. Its beautiful landscape and unique geological characteristics has been strong magnet than attracts travelers to come to see its beauty on their own. Surrounded by sea of sand ans also savannah in its southern side, along with the smoke that comes out of its crater, Mount Bromo offers a breathtaking post card perfect view to its visitors. The sunrise over Mount Bromo is also said to be one of the most beautiful on earth.

The Yadnya Kasada Festival

Let me explain you about the history briefly (source : www.wikipedia.org).

The Tenggerese or Tengger people are an ethnic minority in eastern Java who claim to be the descendants of the Majapahit princes .Their population of roughly 90.000 is centered in thirty villages in the isolated Tengger mountains (Mount Bromo) within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in Eastern Java.

The main festival of the Tenggerese is the Yadnya Kasada, which last about a month. On the fourteenth day of the Kasada, the Tenggerese go to Poten Bromo and ask for blessing from the main deity Hyang Widi Wasa and Mahadeva, the God of the Mountain (Mount Semeru) by presenting annual offerings of rice, fruit, vegetables, flowers, livestock, and other local produce.

They will also see the examination of the medicine men memorizing prayers. The medicine man who passes the exam is chosen to be spiritual leader of Tengger Tribe.

The origin of a legend which dates back to the Majapahit kingdom, during the reign of ing Brawijaya, in which the queen of the Kingdom gave birth to a daughter named Roro Anteng, who married Jaka Seger, a young man from the Brahmin caste.

According to the legend, Jaka Seger and Roro Anteng were among many others who fled from the already tattering Majapahit Kingdom during the 15th century, when the declining kingdom was already in a brink of collapse while the rapid spread of Islam in Java was begun. The couple with their followers later settled in the Tengger mountains and ruled the region jointly under the tittle Purbawisesa Mangkurat Ing Tengger. Tradition holds belief that they are ancestors of modern Tengger people.

For a few years the Tenggerese people flourished under the leadership of Jaka Seger and Roro Anteng, yet the king and queen were unhappy for they had no children. Desperate, they decided to climb to the top of Mt. Bromo assured them offspring but with the condition that the youngest child be sacrificed in the crater of the volcano. After giving birth to twenty-five children, the time came for Roro Anteng and to fulfil her part of the pledge. Althought they were reluctant, they were threatened with catastrophe, forcing them to futfill their pledge and complying the god’s wishes, they have no choice but to sacrifice their 25th child, Kesuma, by throwing him into the crater. In an alternate story, Kesuma was taken and consumed by fire arising from the crater when he was about to flee from Mt. Bromo. The Tengger people then started to commemorate this festival until present time.

This year, the Yadnya Kasada festival will be held on July 21 to 22nd 2016. However, one day before the ceremony, which is July 20th is Pura Agung Poten’s anniversary day. The temple anniversary ceremony is usually will be held at noon. And for Kasodo ceremony will be held on July 21th all day long. The peak of ritual ceremony is when late at night, during the full moon, people will go together to the creater to throw their offerings. During the ceremony, all people also have to dress up in Sarong and Kebaya to follow the ceremonial procession.

Takanobu Shiina dan Surat Peserta Ujian S2 (Part 2)

Memang sejak lama, aku udah diberi predikat “NEKAT” oleh teman-temanku. Karena aku sendiri punya prinsip,.... “Selama orang lain bisa, kenapa aku gak ?” Kali ini, bukan tentang traveling ke Bromo yanghanya 67$ tetapi tentang studi di Jepang. Ketika itu, aku sudah lulus kuliah, jurusan Sosiologi di Universitas Sebelas Maret ( UNS ), tapi masih ngekos di sekitar kampus. Nah, kebetulan kosku itu dekat dengan wisma seni, semacam tempat menginap sekaligus tempat nongkrongnya para bule baik itu yang exchange student di UNS atau Institut Seni Indonesia ( ISI-Solo ) juga turis. Dari zaman kuliah memang sering banget nongkrong disana. Lumayanlah bisa belajar bahasa Inggris gratis. As usual , dengan modal SKSD (sok kenal sok dekat), aku berhasil kenalan dengan teman dari Chiba, Jepang.
